Petite On A Budget

A Blog for Those of Us Who Would LOVE a Tailor...Someday.

So in a previous post I gushed about the new Soul Origine espadrilles. I did end up ordering them, but I went through quite the adventure before I found the pair I’m ultimately keeping.

So as a refresher here are the new Origine espadrilles:

They also have them available as ballet flats. My first choice was the light aqua (top of the pic), with navy in a close second. My havaianas flip flop size is a 37/38, and my current pair of espadrilles is a 37 and they are quite big. I ordered the aqua in a 36 (they are OUT of 35, ladies! sorry!) and eagerly waited. But, this was the unfortunate result:

These were actually the same size as my 37s, which is a shame because the color is GORGEOUS. These shoes are even cuter in person, and it killed me a little inside to have to give these babies up. I returned them and ordered the navy in a 35, as well as the ballet in lime green, also a 35. They arrived today, and the result was much better. First, the lime green flats:

I actually didn’t like the flats as much as the espadrilles. They are very cute and equally well made, but the stitching on the top irritated my feet. I would definitely need an anti-rub stick every time I wore these. The lime green is definitely LIME, it’s happy and great for spring. As you can see, it is a snug fit. I imagine that since these shoes are pure cotton they would stretch with wear, but my feet were pretty cramped and my heel was hanging off a bit. It does mention in the package insert that since these are partly handmade the size varies a bit, but these were too much. Back they go!

Finally the winner: the navy espadrilles, size 35. These were very lovely. The contrast of the beige sole with the deep navy top had a great effect, and I can see these taking me into fall. Here they are:

Third time’s the charm! The fit lengthwise was perfect. I love that contrast stitching and the color is a rich, deep navy that looks lighter in this photo than in real life. I am very happy with these, and I can’t wait to pair them with a cute sundress and cardigan for spring!

Overall, I will say that for anyone who is a size 36 and above, lucky you, you have a shot at the aquas. They really are the loveliest of the colors IMO, but the navy will most likely be more versatile for fall. The ballet flats run narrower than the espadrilles. I have pretty narrow feet and they were snug. Also, I should note that these sizes are WIDE which may account for the need to size down. Even in the proper size the rubber band across the top of the espadrille still had a smidgen of space, but not enough to change my stride in the shoe. I am so happy I got my hands on these. I’ve heard people scoff at them because “Toms blah blah blah”. I will say that I bought these and not Toms not because of price or brand, but because I grew up with the butter soles of havaianas, and there really isn’t a better sole out there. I’m glad to support my birth country’s industry even a little! Haters gonna hate I guess. Hope this review helps someone find their Soul match!
